Schools
Our education programme is tailored to suit students at Key Stage 1 through to GCSE, and our Curator is happy to work with teachers to produce bespoke workshops where required. We are constantly updating and developing the workshops we offer to schools and are hoping to be able to offer programmes for science, maths and technology in the near future as well. All workshops and handling sessions are currently charged at £2.50 per student, per workshop. We also offer a half hour film, Heroes of Medicine, which gives a good general introduction to Western medicine. This is suitable for late primary school up to GCSE and beyond.
GCSE workshops
We offer two excellent workshops tailored to the GCSE curriculum that can be used as introductions to topics and make ideal revision exercises. These are:
Chopping People Up: Victorian Surgery
A gory account of key developments in surgery during the 19th Century: anaesthetics, antiseptics and surgical instruments. The workshop uses authentic Victorian objects and students will have a chance to find out how a limb would have been amputated in 1830!
The People of Worcester Versus King Cholera
Students get a chance to learn about the weird and wonderful ways that the people of Worcester attempted to cure and prevent the cholera after the 1831 outbreak. They will consider the public health act, different cures and preventions, what life was like in Worcester when cholera struck, and why it struck where it did.
We will shortly be able to offer several loans boxes with objects from the collection as well as printed and digital resources for classrooms. These will be offered free of charge but must be collected and dropped off at the Museum.
If you are interested in making a visit to the Museum, finding out about the loans boxes or would like to request a teachers’ pack, please contact us and the Curator will be happy to discuss your requirements.
